Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor is an animated movie directed by Dave Fleischer and was released in 1936. It is standard 2D animation and primarily uses watercolor for its backgrounds. The film takes place in Sinbad’s Island.
The film begins on an island. It is filled with a ton of creatures such as lions, snakes, dragons, etc. There is a sign on the island that says “Beware.” Sinbad then comes out and sings about how tough he is. He is a burly man, with a big red nose. One thing that is noticeable is that the creatures have chains around their necks and are either afraid of or hostile towards Sinbad, indicating when Sinbad arrived at the island, he beat them into submission. He then hears and spots Popeye steering a boat and singing. Popeye is a skinny man, but with big forearms and a huge chin. He is also bald. He is accompanied by a fat man who loves to eat and a woman who is the damsel in distress of the movie. Sinbad finds the woman to be pretty and sends his giant bird to destroy the ship and bring him the lady. The bird succeeds, and in a scene that doesn’t age well, Sinbad tries courting her and trying to kiss her while the woman is running away terrified. Despite the ship getting destroyed, Sinbad and the other man are able to reach the island. The other man gets distracted by a duck and tries to eat it. It is then Sinbad and his creatures vs. Popeye. This is a very entertaining fight. Sinbad and Popeye fight for a bit, Sinbad punches Popeye away a distance, and then one of his creatures attack Popeye. Popeye defeats the creature, and then goes back to fighting Sinbad. This sequence repeats a couple times. In a humorous scene, Sinbad bear hugs Popeye and Popeye’s head turns so red that it briefly turns into a radish. For most of the fight, Sinbad has the upper hand. However, once Popeye eats his famous spinach, he makes quick work of Sinbad. The film ends with Popeye posing in front of the camera.
This was a cute little short. There are a few areas that don’t age well but overall, it was solid. The characters were loud and expressive, the colors were vibrant, and the slapstick was top notch. It is worth checking out.
